6. Cola Test
7 January 2025 12:00I bought three bottles of sugar-free cola, one from Coop fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coop_(tavaramerkki) a cheaper new brand, one Coca-Cola and one Pepsi-Cola. Then I took six small glasses, three for mother and three for myself, wrote the name of the cola on a piece of tape and taped it at the bottom of each glass. I poured a sample of each cola into the glasses, mixed the glasses (obviously mine and mother's separtely) so that I wouldn't know which glass contained which cola and then we had a tasting!
My expectations were that I would not be able to tell the cola's apart by brand or taste. I really expected them to all taste exactly the same.
The tasting:
All of the colas did taste like cola and the differences were only nuanced, but those differences were surprisingly clear. One brand had a pleasant, sweet taste. One had a sharp, industrial undertone. One had an after/undertaste that could only be described as "weird".
I liked the sweet taste best, and the two others shared a third place, because while the sharp taste was unpleasant, the weird taste was even more so, because I could not tell what it was.
I expected the pleasent, sweet taste to be Coca-Cola, the sharp taste to be Pepsi-Cola and the weird taste Coop-Cola.
The results:
The pleasant, sweet tasting cola turned out to be Pepsi. I was very surpised to find that both mother and I had chosen it as the clear winner. I was even more surpised, because when we do have cola in the 'fridge, it is usually always Pepsi but I could not recognise it.
The sharp taste belonged to the cheapest of the bunch, Coop. And that means that my least favourite, the weird tasting one, was Coca-Cola.
I am amazed at the power that a brand-name has. As I told you, I don't even favour Coca-Cola and yet, when I had a blind tasting, I immediately guessed that the best one was Coke. That can only be because of the advertising that is constantly around us and keeps affecting us even on products we don't much care for. I really thought that I would have managed to remain indifferent to sometihng so insignifficant as a particular brand of lemonade, but no.
The results could have been different for the sugar-sweetened versions, because the particular sweetener used must have affected the taste. But I prefer the sugar-free version on the occasion when I do have cola, so I don't think I will do another tasting. I know that I prefer Pepsi -at least until they change the recipe.
